Reunion
Harald HauswaldUn mot sur l'oeuvre
HHAU005
This image is from a long-term project by Harald Hauswald on FC Union, an East Berlin football club. Originally Harald responded to an assignment from a West German magazine wanting to show the state of hooliganism in East Germany. His encounter with supporters of Union Berlin FC marked the beginning of the adventure. Harald never left them again and followed them regularly for more than twenty-five years, telling the story of Germany through them.
This photo immortalises an important moment in the country’s history. In 1990, a year after the fall of the wall, the first friendly was held between Union and Hertha (West Berlin’s club). The match between the two sister clubs was held in the Olympic Stadium.
Le témoignage d'Harald Hauswald
This reunion was a great moment and probably one of the most peaceful matches in Union’s history. Before the fall of the wall, West Germans could come from time to time and spend a day in the East. Many Hertha supporters would come to matches against Union. Ties were never broken.
Le choix de Jean-Denis
This is much more than just a match, it’s history before your very eyes. The Olympic Stadium is jam-packed to celebrate the reunion after 40 years of separation. 80,000 inhabitants of this city that was cut in two for so long could finally get together over a shared passion. An image which ennobles football and sport in general. Spectacular.
